UNSOUND 2011
»FUTURESHOCK«
08.10. - 16.10.2011 / Krakow, Poland

This year’s theme, “Future Shock,” is borrowed from the prophetic and best-selling 1970 book by Alvin Toffler, which described the disorienting effects of accelerated technological and social change. Confronted with an unprecedented sense of information overload, many artists reach backward, sideways and forward to re-imagine the future from the vantage point of the past, filtered through the present via outmoded technologies or disjointed contexts.

Do they do this to escape a transient now of over-abundance, where the future is less a world of hope and promise, as it once was, than a frightening place? Are artists trading digital means for vintage analogue equipment because they are afraid computers have a life of their own, one that disembodies us and constrains the way music sounds?

Some in this year’s program capture the sense of a world ending, systems collapsing. Others use sound to explore deep, personal channels of memory, or draw us into contemplative stability zones. Some fly into sci-fi realms inspired by film and literature, from the fantastic and visionary to the bleak. Then there are those who strive to unshackle themselves from the past entirely, in search of the unknown. We’ve included legendary names whose influence reverberates through the decades, via their use of technology in music: Morton Subotnick, Chris & Cosey, John Foxx, Model 500. These figures lie at the core of Unsound 2011, artists who have charted ways into the future. The Internet fuels an evermore frenzied search for the new via breathless blogs and sharing technologies, an embodiment of Toffler’s 1970 prediction of how art would also be affected by accelerated change. It may be that the rapid replication of sounds ultimately impinges upon invention, or perhaps ideas now being tracked evolve into styles we cannot yet imagine. So let’s meet again in 2030 or so (hopefully not from an apocalyptic wasteland) and decide: what did the future really sound like in 2011? Will artists then be reaching back into a past that reached into a past for inspiration, turning music into a never-ending hall of mirrors? Time will tell.

For now: welcome to Unsound “Future Shock.”

DescriptionInspired by the work of Pythagoras, “Concord” is a sculptural musical instrument consisting of numerous metal strings of various lengths. The sound of the instrument is created by a network of self-resonating strings arranged in a space. The strain of the strings and the corresponding pitch of sound create a musical succession, the sum of which is a harmonious chord.

DescriptionPolish duo Black Taxi is a new project from Patryk Zakrocki and Radek Duda. They have released four thematically linked short films on the web about a black taxi that drove away one night with a friend’s clarinets. “nature Study” is a series of experiments involving the live processing of sounds from nature and the use of landscape as a possible deformation of acoustic waves. Black Taxi also plans to perform classic works of electronic and electro-acoustic music, starting with four variations of John Cage. Black Taxi will perform at Unsound in various unexpected locations throughout the city from Monday 10.10 – 12.10. Check the Unsound website and Facebook page during the festival for details. The duo will also set up a special installation involving a snooker table and sound in Manggha on the night of 11.10.2011.

DescriptionTechno began with Toffler, who influenced Juan Atkins in his desire to create a new music with technology as a source of pleasure/transcendence. Atkin’s band version of the legendary Model 500 is at the heart of tonight’s room 1, including an array of dance music heavyweights and mutators. room 2 showcases the skewed club music of 100% Silk, not not Fun’s sister label, and Poland’s Pet records.

DescriptioniconAclass is a new project from MC dälek, of the American experimental hip-hop duo Dälek, owing as much to industrial and noise music as the sound collages of Public Enemy. iconAclass sees MC dälek maintain Dälek's underground ethos, whilst putting a stronger focus on the lyrics.

For Unsound, iconAclass will perform a special one off collaborative show with under-appreciated Polish trio Napzyklat (NP), whose crossover of hip-hop, noise and electronics make a direct connection. In fact, dälek has already made a guest appearance on a track included on Napszyklat's 2011 album "Kultur Shock," which bodes good things indeed.

DescriptionMisusing his hardware and software samplers, Romania's Sillyconductor enjoys chopping up lots of tiny bits from choirs, chamber orchestras or serious symphonies and mixing them altogether into fast building collages. Often childish, deafening, or both, the resulting oeuvres are pretty diverse and try to prove that 16 seconds of orchestra hits are usually enough to summon the headbanger in every classical music enthusiast. It's like hearing four orchestras fight eachother, but dancier.

DescriptionAfter a variety of albums and download-only releases, now is the time for a final statement from Poland's infamous The Complainer. Wojciech Kucharczyk started TC as a solo project, later turning it into a band playing "real“ instruments, from electro to dance-punk and ballads, with both raw and orchestral arrangements. After travelling the world with this group and recording new songs in sometimes bizzare places (for example, on the top of the Temple of The Sun in Teotihuacan or on the beaches of Miami), he is now returning to the solo show of his roots. The loop has closed. The Shrine is a project created to tell stories about Wojciech’s fascination with the 80s, the time when he started to be a music fan and musician himself. And the best way to tell these stories is to play some of his favorite songs from that era. The idea is to remain as close as possible to the originals, but still to stay genuinely unique and to sound current. Be ready for some new discoveries, re-discoveries, inventions and surprises. The visual aspect of the spectacle won’t leave you disappointed, either, and expect some spoken word too. The Shrine opens it’s gates for all of you believers!
